Catrice Ombre Top Coat

Hello lovelies!

Something interesting appeared in my local drugstore this weekend and I thought everybody who sees it in store would like to know "Does it work?" So let me tell you my experience with Catrice Ombre Top Coat. (Now that I google it, it has been out there for a few weeks, I just have not set foot in my drug store much lately!)

So what they say is the following. Start out with any light colour. Then put one coat of of ombre top coat on the second nail, two coats on the third, ... you get it. So I tried it. I started out with a baby blue base, She Nail Enamel 304, that I picked up in Malta.

So I left my index nail alone, put one coat on the middle finger, two on the ring finger and three on the pinky. This is the result:

Now I must warn you. You might want to add a fast drying top coat before applying the ombre top coat, because it will bubble. Also, don't be me, be patient between coats. I was not and had to redo my pinky twice (ugh, I know, twice! how stupid!)

Well with 1,2,3 coats, the result was not as spectacular as the bottle cap made us think. And I used the right base colour, look:

So I decided to double up on coats. Yes, that is 0, 2, 4, 6! That would be 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 on all 5 nails ;) But this got result, look:

That, I liked. Although it's a shame about the bubbling. About the application. It's kinda tricky. The formula is so super fluid, and you have to apply it quickly, or it will wipe away the underlying layer. And of course, you have to apply it carefully over all the underlying layers. This is really difficult with something that's more fluid than water, so my cuticles flooded heavily, hence cleanup was required. This was fast though, it easily dissolves in the acetone on your brush.

So overall, I'm mildly impressed. The effect is nice, but takes more time than one would expect. I do want to try it over a pink colour though. And I'm thinking a brighter colour than Catrice recommends, otherwise all pinkies will end up grey.

So would you pick this up?

  1. It looks like a great idea. To bad you have to use so many coats to get the desired look. Id almost rather just paint my nails with different colors than load up on 8 layers of polish. Great review by the way. Hopefully you can get it to work without the bubbles next time.

    1. Yes me too. But I guess if one does not have as much polish as we do ( ;-) ), then it might be a nice alternative.
      Thank you <3

  2. The product idea is brilliant, so bad about the cons...
How about try with another base colour and see what happens?
Anyway, I like very much your second attempt... I hope to find a topper like this one ;-)

  4. It's a really brilliant concept. I'm interested to see your results with a different color. It seems like if the product was tweaked just a bit it would be a winner all around.

  5. It had much better results with more coats, but it stinks it couldn't just do what it says to begin with! haha!

  6. Thank you for this review! I've seen some interesting topcoats come out lately and am so curious. I think it does look pretty cool and would be good for some people, I'd rather throw on some studs to spice up my manis.

  7. It sounds interesting, but with the bubbling, the ridiculous amount of layers and the temperamental application I would just use something else like sheer tints. The look you created is really cool!

    1. Yes indeed. But if they could just do something about that formula, it would be much better!

  8. This is such an interesting idea, too bad the formula wasn't that great! This is so much easier than trying to find enough different polishes to complete the ombre effect haha.

    1. It is! If only it were a tiny bit more pigmented...

  9. The idea behind the top coat is great but I definitely don't like the end result. Or, to clarify, I love your ombre, and I love ombre manis overall. But it takes so much time that it's just not worth it imho. I could just shop my stash with 5 different shades of any colour and it would be much quicker and I wouldn't need so many coats of whatever!

    1. Agreed! If it worked better, it would be ideal for those who do not have stashes like ours ;)

    1. OK but be prepared for 8 coats!! ;) I'll try it out with another colour soon, maybe that will work better.

  11. I wished this worked better, I really love the idea. I wonder what it would look like over a darker colour?

  12. the concept sounds interesting, EXCEPT... there's no way in this world I am going to do 8 coats on a fingernail for the life of meeeh!! You are awesome for trying this out! I wouldn't have had the patience.
couldn't they make the thing just a tad more pigmented? like the OPI tints? I bet that would work with the OPI titns much easier in 1 2 3 coats... but haven't tried really :)
