Splitting and peeling nails: my rescue product

Hi lovelies!

I often read questions on the internet on how to cure or prevent splitting and peeling nails. I finally found something that works almost instantly! My Cinderella hand had been splitting and peeling forever and I had tried EVERYTHING! Eventually I tried Herôme "Nail Growth Explosion", in an effort to speed up the nail growth process. And to my surprise, the peeling stopped! Let's dive into that a bit more:

Herôme is the leading nail care brand in The Netherlands. They create all sorts of products, including nail polish, nail hardeners, nail oils and cuticle care products. One of my all-time favourite nail care products has been their hydrating nail gel, which I always use after swatching. But that alone has not prevented my nails from splitting, alas. It is however a very non-invasive, everyday nail care product that I highly recommend.

But to really address those peeling traitors, one needs a more invasive product. Luckily the problem of splitting, peeling and all-around brittle nails is what lies at the beginning of the Herôme company. The owner of the company was suffering from the exact same problem and eventually developed a product that solved her issues. 30 years later, many products are on the market, targeting different nail problems, one of which is "Nail Growth Explosion" (from here on "NGE").

How to use:

When your nails are as bad as mine were, you'll want to start a two-week treatment. It is very easy.

  1. The product comes in a little vial with a dropper, to carefully apply it to the nails. You'll want to apply little drops to all your nails and then massage it into your nails. For the massaging you can use your fingers, or, if you have sensitive skin like me, a little acrylic (paint) brush.

  2. Then, and this is very important, put cuticle oil on your cuticles! NGE contains formaldehyde, which dehydrates your skin, so in order to protect it, you'll want to use cuticle oil. By now, all indies have excellent selections of cuticle oils, so they are not hard to find. Herôme also sells cuticle care products. A budget-friendly alternative can be Essence's Nail and Cuticle Pen, which I reviewed aaaaages ago, but is still in the market and I still use it on the go all the time.

  3. Just leave it overnight (don't rub your eyes - to prevent that use gloves or socks) and repeat this every night for two weeks. The peeling should have come to a halt and you should now be able to grow out those pesky peeling patches (as of course, one cannot undo the peeling that had already happened, but it will just stop your nails from peeling further). And - BONUS - this stuff, as the name suggests, increases the growth speed of your nails, so the bad stuff will grow out even faster!

To further maintain your nails, I suggest using the product every once in a while (e.g. twice a month), just to keep them healthy.

How it works:

I am no biochemist, but Herôme claims that the ingredients (i.e. the seaweed and amino acids)  improve the micro-circulation underneath the nail bed, making it more easily accessible for your every-day nutrients, hence accelerating the nail growth. The Panthenol, Boabab and Acacia hydrate the nails and keep them flexible, preventing them from breaking and splitting. The Nettle extract contains silicon, which helps strengthen the nails. I looked up these ingredients on the internet and found that they are indeed known for these properties.

Here's a full list of ingredients:
Aqua, Propylene Glycol, Glycerin, Trisodium Phosphate, Formaldehyde, Carbomer, Phenoxyethanol, Benzophenone-4, Panthenol, Parfum, Methylparaben, Butylparaben, Ethylparaben, Butylene Glycol, Isobutylparaben, Propylparaben, Adansonia Digitata Pulp Etract, Palmitoyl Proline (and) Magnesium Palmitoyl Glutamate (and) Sodium Palmitoyl Sarcosinate, Laminaria Japonica Extract, Algin, Urtica Dioica Extract, Acacia Senegal Gum Extract, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, CI 17200, Xanthan Gum, Serine

Where to buy:

Now where will you be able to find it? Herome.com offers international shipping. I expect Western European countries to have Herome in their drug stores, or their higher-end perfume and make-up stores, like Douglas. In the US, you can find it here, for example, but I have no experience with that website, so I suggest intense googliness to find the best prices and safe web shops!

For my fellow Dutchies, Herôme is now 2 for 1 at Kruidvat! I intend to stock up, since my vial is almost empty.

Hope this helps those who are desperately looking for a solution to their awfully splitting nails! I'm so intensely happy that I found this product; I no longer have split nails!

  1. Wow, I've never heard of this brand, but I'm glad it worked for you! I also have peeling on a couple of nails on my Cinderella hand. Even just moisturising helps, but nothing stops it completely. Perhaps this would!

  5. That product sounds great!! My nails only peel occasionally, so I don't really take the time or effort to try and avoid it but I'm thinking maybe I should start.
